MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine College of Physicians has suspended for six months Dr. Anthony Leachon, independent health reform advocate, over alleged violations of the PCP Code of Ethics.
The PCP said its decision to suspend Leachon resulted from a formal ethics process conducted in accordance with the group’s Code of Ethics and established procedures.
“Any complaint brought before the organization undergoes a careful, thorough and impartial review process, with due regard for fairness, evidence and the rights of all parties involved,” the PCP said in a statement.
Leachon allegedly made defamatory public statements as well as claims of corruption and unethical practice against his colleagues.
A former PCP president himself, Leachon said he was surprised by the PCP’s action against him.
“I was deeply saddened and stunned by the news. It is never easy to be judged by an institution you have served and loved, and the weight of such a decision is heavy on the heart,” Leachon said in a statement.
“It is therefore deeply concerning that, at a time when the Dengvaxia cases are finally moving forward, efforts are being made to question my credibility and integrity – including the filing of complaints against me and the recent disciplinary action imposed by the PCP,” he added.
The suspension came as hearings on cases that involved the controversial anti-dengue vaccine resumed before the Sandiganbayan and the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.
Leachon lamented that the PCP did not gave him the chance to defend himself and immediately implemented the suspension order.
“I respectfully disagree with the action taken by the PCP. Together with my lawyers, I am presently studying the available remedies and appropriate courses of action,” he said.
“It is deeply troubling that disciplinary action was imposed without affording me the right to appeal or present my side. This denial of due process undermines the principles of fairness that should guide our profession,” he added.
