COTABATO CITY — Agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency seized P6.8 million worth of shabu from a dealer reportedly linked to remnants of the now-defunct Dawlah Islamiya, who was entrapped in Barangay Banga, Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, on Wednesday, April 22.

The 57-year-old suspect, initially identified only as Abdul, is now in the joint custody of agents of the PDEA–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PDEA-BARMM) and the police while efforts to locate his accomplices in Marawi City continue. He will be charged for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Edgar Jubay, regional director of PDEA-BARMM, told reporters on Friday that the entrapment operation leading to the suspect’s arrest was carried out with the help of members of the Islamic community in Lanao del Sur, traditional Maranao leaders, and local officials, including Lanao del Sur Gov. Mamintal Adiong Jr.

"The operation was based on reports to them by their constituents about his large-scale peddling of shabu in Marawi City and in nearby towns," Jubay said.

PDEA-BARMM agents, together with operatives from various units in Marawi City and the Lanao del Sur provincial police under the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region led by Brig. Gen. Jaysen De Guzman, immediately frisked and arrested Abdul after he allegedly sold them a kilo of shabu worth P6.8 million during a buy-bust operation in Barangay Banga.

Officials from intelligence units of the military’s Western Mindanao Command and its component unit, the 103rd Infantry Brigade in Lanao del Sur, separately told reporters on Friday that the suspect is allegedly known for sharing portions of his earnings with some remaining members of the now-defunct Dawlah Islamiya in remote areas of Lanao del Sur, which have been previously linked to drug trafficking activities in exchange for payment.
