MANILA, Philippines — The quality of air in most areas of the country improved yesterday even as the forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia continued to rage, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

DENR’s air quality index showed that the amount of particulate matter in all areas in Luzon was at “good” levels.

The air quality in most parts of the Visayas was also at “good” levels, except in some areas in Negros Island Region and Central Visayas.

“Good” to “fair” levels were recorded in most parts of Mindanao, except Northern Mindanao, Davao and Caraga, where the quality of air was described as “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

The public has been advised to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, particularly in areas blanketed by haze.

People sensitive to air pollution including children, the elderly and those suffering from respiratory or cardiovascular conditions have been told to remain indoors and take necessary precautions.

Wearing of face masks, preferably an N95 or of equivalent quality, is recommended when going out in areas where haze is visible.
