MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has donated $40,000 to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to support its technical cooperation training, capacity-building initiatives and voluntary multi-donor trust fund aimed at assisting developing countries.

Philippine Permanent Representative to the IMO Teodoro Locsin Jr. handed over the donation to IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez on March 26 at the IMO headquarters in London.

The contribution, coursed through the IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Program under the Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division (TCID), will fund training programs focused on implementing the IMO’s Strategy for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Shipping.

This includes the development of seafarers’ training and skills programs, which will primarily benefit personnel from relevant government agencies in interested countries.

Additionally, the donation may be allocated to cover travel expenses for delegates from developing nations, particularly those from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), enabling their in-person participation in IMO GHG meetings.

The TCID oversees IMO’s capacity-building initiatives and implements technical cooperation projects, ensuring the organization’s alignment with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“The Philippines, a candidate for reelection to the IMO Council under Category C for the term 2026-2027, at elections to be held towards the end of the year, prioritizes IMO projects that promote sustainable practices at sea such as the reduction of GHG emissions from ships,” the Philippine embassy in London said in a statement.

“The Philippines, as a fellow developing country, supports the participation of other developing countries in meetings at the IMO of importance to them, especially those from SIDS and LDCs,” the statement added.
