MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines and the International Labor Organization (ILO) have reaffirmed their continued partnership in support of decent work and social justice.
During a July 2 meeting at the ILO headquarters, Ambassador Carlos Sorreta, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations in Geneva, shared with ILO director general Gilbert Houngbo the priorities of Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino.
Preparing the Filipino workforce for the future of work, strengthening social protection and welfare and promoting safe, healthy and decent workplaces are among Tolentino’s priorities.
These priorities align with the agenda of the 115th International Labor Conference in June 2027, Sorreta said.
The 2027 ILC will feature key discussions on chemical hazards, social security and harnessing technology to transform the economy.
Domestic processes are underway for the Philippines’ ratification of ILO Convention 155 on Occupational Safety and Health of 1981, Sorreta noted.
Once completed, the Philippines will have ratified all 10 of the fundamental ILO Conventions – a feat only accomplished by two other countries in the Asia Pacific.
