Why did Phoemela Baranda have to hide her daughter in the past?

In “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" Friday, the actress and model  said that her daughter, Kim, is now 26 years old and she’s “doing very good.”

“Thank you—because of Tito Boy’s help na naman, narating ko na ngayon siyempre ‘yung gusto ko na maging ina kay Kim,” she said.

Tito Boy recalled that Phoemela was only 18 when she got pregnant with Kim and was 19 when she gave birth. Kim was first introduced as Phoemela’s niece and then as her sister.

“We went through a lot because my mom, ‘yung mommy ko ‘yung naging nanay niya na, of course, passed away and ‘yung big ano namin ‘yon, big challenge namin or malungkot na parte ng buhay namin ‘yon,” Phoemela said.

She admitted that her maturity level was different back then.

“Nung 20s ako, talagang isip-bata. Hindi ako handa. Hindi kaya,” she said.

According to Phoemela, it was her mom’s decision to initially hide Kim’s real identity back then.

“I agreed to that because that time kasi as a model, talagang maraming morality clause, marami akong contract na mawawala. Nakakontrata ako sa ganitong product, shampoo, sabon, lahat ‘yan, they’re very strict sa morality clause,” she said.

She added that if she revealed back then that she had a child out of wedlock, she would lose her job.

“But sobrang ibang-iba na ngayon, ‘di ba? Ngayon, talagang lahat ‘yan, accepted naman. So that time, I had to do it for my family para hindi kami mawalan ng income, siyempre,” she said, adding that she was the family’s breadwinner.

Phoemela also said that she talked to Kim a few years before she made the revelation on TV.

“Medyo nahirapan siya kasi talagang para kaming magkapatid up to now. Actually para kaming sisters,” she said. “Alam mo, swerte ako, Tito Boy. Hindi siya nagalit sa ‘kin. Feeling ko naman walang resentment. Naintindihan niya.”

Kim also has a connection now with her father.

“She turned 21, and sabi ko it’s time for her to meet her father talaga, na magkaroon na kayo ng relasyon. Kasi na-meet naman niya ‘yung daddy niya before. But to have a relationship with the father is very important para mabuo din siya,” Phoemela said.

Phoemela currently stars in GMA's first Viu Original series, "Slay," where she plays the controlling mother of Gabbi Garcia's character.

The series also stars Julie Anne San Jose, Mikee Quintos, Ysabel Ortega, Derrick Monasterio, Royce Cabrera, Jay Ortega, Gil Cuerva, Tina Paner, Chuckie Dreyfus, and Simon Ibarra.

"Slay" airs on GMA Network from Mondays to Thursdays at 9:25 p.m.
