MANILA, Philippines — Coffee chain Pickup Coffee is aiming to increase its footprint by having at least 800 stores in the country by yearend and expanding through franchising.

Pickup Coffee Philippines president and CEO Rami Chahwan told reporters that the goal is to have 750 to 800 company-owned stores within the year.

“We’re just being a little more careful now with what’s happening in the Middle East. So we used to open at the rate of 20 to 25 locations a month. Now we’re scaling down to probably 15 to 20,” he said.

As the coffee chains starts its new chapter of growth through franchising, he said that the total store count is expected to be higher.

“We want to attract similar-valued and similar-minded entrepreneurs,” he said.

Founded in 2022, Pickup Coffee currently has 530 stores in the country.

Pickup Coffee global managing director Francis Flores said that the investment ranges from P1.7 million to P4 million, depending on the store format.

He said the investment is at P1.7 million for the smaller kiosks and P2 million for the outdoor carts.

Meanwhile, the investment for bigger formats covering around 50 to 80 square meters is at P3 million to P4 million.

He said  the investment covers the one-time franchise fee, cart construction, equipment and initial stock.

The projected payback period is from 18 to 24 months.

Despite the Middle East conflict that has pushed up prices, Chahwan said that Pickup Coffee’s prices have remained the same.

“There’s no plans  (to adjust prices) because unlike other chains, our operating expenses are kept to a minimum,” he said noting that the business operates through a small footprint, without a lot of seating and air-conditioning.

“So even let’s say the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) (price) goes up, we’re not affected,” he said.

He also said Pickup Coffee expects its sales to continue growing at around 18 to 20 percent this year given resilient demand for coffee.

“Usually a consumer, the last thing they would cut is that cup of coffee,” he said noting that it serves as a self-reward and allows people to stay awake and work.

He said that new products should help drive sales.

Outside the Philippines, Pickup Coffee has over 50 stores in Mexico, where the coffee chain also aims to continue growing.
