MANILA, Philippines — Most Filipinos are expecting better national policies following the midterm elections, a survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed.

The May 2 to 6 survey, commissioned by the Stratbase group, showed that a majority of the respondents have positive outlooks on six national policy areas.

For instance, 84 percent believed that accessibility of health care services for all will be better. It was composed of 39 percent who said it will be “definitely better” and 45 percent who said it will be somewhat better.

Only 14 percent said health care policy will stay the same, while two percent said it will worsen.

Other national policies included in the survey were food security and agricultural development (81 percent “better,” 16 percent “stay the same,” three percent “worse”), infrastructure development (80 percent “better,” 17 percent “stay the same,” three percent worse) and climate resilience and protection of national resources (70 percent “better,” 23 percent “stay the same,” seven percent “worse”).

These were followed by national security and defense in the West Philippine Sea (67 percent “better,” 25 percent “stay the same,” eight percent “worse”) and management of inflation (62 percent “better,” 29 percent “stay the same,” eight percent “worse”).

“There is an expectation that national policies will deliver on promises. But delivery must be anchored on governance that is principled and accountable,” Stratbase president Dindo Manhit said.

“As Filipinos look ahead, they are not just calling for programs, they want and deserve a kind of leadership that puts the country first and commits to transparency,” he added.

The same survey also found that most Filipinos want newly elected lawmakers to prioritize policies that will improve the country’s education, agriculture and health care sectors.

“Filipinos expect both houses of Congress to direct public resources towards solutions that improve lives, which can be felt through quality jobs, just compensation, improved infrastructure, enhanced health facilities, accessible education, and stable and affordable food supply,” Manhit said.

“These are not new calls, but what is different now is the louder clamor from the public for better governance,” he added.

The SWS survey had 1,800 respondents and a margin of error of plus/minus 2.31 percent.
