MANILA, Philippines — Backing President Marcos’ directive to conserve energy amid global fuel price volatility due to the Middle East crisis, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered the implementation of energy-saving measures.
Rationalized personnel and vehicle deployment, reduced non-essential travel, improved operational planning and vehicle pooling must be enforced, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said yesterday.
Mobility assets’ fuel use must be reviewed, Nartatez said.
Fuel prices are expected to further rise due to the United States and Israel’s attack on Iran.
International outbound mail suspended
Meanwhile, the Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) said international outbound mail services in 35 countries have been suspended due to the Middle East conflict.
Countries covered are Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and United Arab Emirates.
Also affected are Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland.
Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Colombia and Brazil followed.
Frugal graduation rites
In Manila, graduation ceremonies in elementary and secondary public schools in the city should be held in school premises as the city “braces for a possible oil-driven price surge,” Mayor Isko Moreno said yesterday.
Moreno urged public schools to keep graduation activities “as modest and as frugal as we can.” — Evelyn Macairan, Josiah Antonio
