MANILA, Philippines — Putting rogue police officers behind bars is not enough; Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rommel Marbil also wants them stripped of their wealth gained from illegal activities.
Marbil issued the directive after 10 members of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) were sacked from their posts and placed under restrictive custody for allegedly extorting P18 million from three people during a raid on a warehouse in Tondo, Manila in February.
Marbil reiterated the PNP’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, stressing that they would not hesitate to seize the assets of corrupt police officers.
He said they would investigate bank accounts and financial holdings of rogue police officers with the assistance of the Anti-Money Laundering Council.
“You will not only be dismissed or imprisoned, we will make sure you lose everything you gained through corruption,” he said.
Apart from the 10 CIDG operatives, there are other police officers implicated in corrupt activities. Among them is the former commander of Quezon City Police District’s criminal investigation and detection unit and two of his subordinates who allegedly allowed a woman detained on qualified theft to visit her family at a hotel during the Holy Week.
Eight officers of the Eastern Police District were also relieved from their posts after stealing millions of cash and other valuables from a Chinese national in Las Piñas.
CIDG director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III said the erring police officers are facing cases of grave coercion, kidnapping and robbery.
