MANILA, Philippines — Despite recording a decrease in crime volume, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is preparing for a possible spike in crimes due to soaring fuel prices.

PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuano said they are keeping tabs on crimes such as robbery and theft.

“It’s not just perception. It’s possible that crimes against property would go up,” Tuano said at a news forum yesterday.

From Jan. 1 to March 12, the PNP recorded 6,377 focus crimes nationwide.

The figure is lower by 12.66 percent compared to the 7,301 cases logged during the same period last year.

The focus crimes are murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, car theft and motorcycle theft.

Tuano noted that 372 gasoline stations have shut down since the Middle East crisis erupted.

“With hundreds losing their jobs, we expect crimes against property to increase,” Tuano said.

Police will intensify visibility on the streets to deter thieves.

Meanwhile, Tuano said 195,500 police personnel are ready for deployment for today’s nationwide transport strike.

Eighteen PNP vehicles consisting of buses, trucks and coaster vans will be fielded to provide free rides to commuters.
