MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has reminded PNP personnel to strictly follow traffic regulations, stressing that police officers must set an example in respecting the law at all times.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said wearing the police badge carries the responsibility of discipline and good conduct, as the public expects law enforcers to lead in upholding rules meant to ensure peace, order and safety.
“Wearing the police badge and uniform comes with a heavy responsibility to set a good example and do what is right at all times,” Nartatez said.
The reminder followed the relief of a Marikina police corporal who figured in a road altercation and blocked a responding fire truck.
Based on initial investigation, the incident stemmed from a near-miss with a tricycle after the fire truck sounded its horn.
Nartatez said police personnel are required to immediately give way to fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles.
He said police authority must always be exercised with discipline and restraint, especially during emergencies.
Under Republic Act 4136, the Land Transportation and Traffic Code, motorists are mandated to pull over and stop when emergency vehicles with sirens are approaching.
Nartatez said the officer’s relief was meant not only to ensure accountability, but also to reinforce discipline among PNP personnel.
“Police should help clear the way during emergencies, not become an obstacle,” he said.
