COTABATO CITY — A motorcycle-riding police staff sergeant was killed in an ambush by gunmen late Wednesday, December 31, while on his way to Malangas town in Zamboanga Sibugay to celebrate New Year’s Day with his family.
The off-duty Staff Sgt. Juneray Estallo Gamones, assigned to the Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Police Office in Pagadian City, was attacked by gunmen in Barangay Poblacion in Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Officials from the Diplahan Municipal Police Station and local authorities said on Friday, January 2, that Gamones died from multiple gunshot wounds sustained in the attack.
Local executives and investigators from the Diplahan police force separately told reporters on Friday that one of the assailants of Gamones took his service firearm before they escaped using a getaway motorcycle.
Superiors of Gamones in the Zamboanga del Sur provincial police, as quoted in radio reports in Cotabato City on Friday, described him as a dedicated and hardworking officer who was friendly to civilians around Camp Avelino in Pagadian City, the police headquarters.
Municipal officials in Diplahan and Malangas, Gamones’ hometown, are assisting investigators and intelligence personnel from various units of Police Regional Office 9 in Zamboanga Sibugay in identifying the gunmen responsible for the attack that killed him.
