MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) is monitoring air and seaports after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a global health emergency.

“We will intensify surveillance in our borders to make sure that the Ebola (virus) will not enter the country,” Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said.

“Don’t worry… Africa is far from our country. We have a protocol for that,” Herbosa added.

The Bureau of Quarantine and Epidemiology Bureau are enforcing heightened surveillance measures, he said.

Countries under the WHO Western Pacific Regional Offices are meeting at the WHO headquarters to discuss the declaration of a public health emergency of international concern, said Herbosa, who is attending the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency, the WHO maintained.

“As of May 16, eight laboratory-confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases and 80 suspected deaths have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” the WHO said.
