CALAPAN CITY — Consumers in Oriental Mindoro are in for a higher billing in May following an announcement by the province's lone power distributor that it will increase its rate by more than P2 per kilowatt hour.
On its social media page, the Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (Ormeco) posted that its billing for the month of May will be adjusted to P15.6684/kWh (kilowatt hour) from last month's P13.4796/kWh or more than P2.00/kWh increase.
Ormeco General Manager Engr. Humphrey Dolor said that the increase is due to the underperformance of the renewable energy sources of the cooperative.
Dolor said in a message to The Manila Times on Tuesday, May 20, that the Inabasan Hydro Power Plant has structural defects, as well as the Catuiran Hydro Power Plant and Linao-Cawayan Hydro Plant.
"The windmill power also did not produce because of little to no wind in Puerto Galera. These resulted in emergency power procurement, and we also experienced the highest demand of 85 MW (megawatts)," explained Dolor.

Before the elections, Ormeco had inked a power supply agreement (PSA) with five independent power producers (IPPs) for a 57-MW supply to resolve the perennial power problem and reduce power by as much as P10.00/kWh.
The Ormeco management had said during the awarding of the PSA that the impact of the new PSAs would be felt only by October this year until 2028.
The power issue had been the main issue that the candidates in the recent elections had promised to solve once they got elected.
The power crisis had been one of the issues raised against re-elected Gov. Humerlito Dolor, younger brother of the Ormeco general manager.
