MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has allocated space in Balamban town in Cebu to expand the West Cebu Industrial Park-Special Economic Zone, which hosts a number of global businesses employing more than 14,000 workers.

In Proclamation 1105 signed on Dec. 4, Marcos ordered the inclusion of seven parcels of land in Barangays Arpili and Buanoy, with a total area of 69,490 square meters, into the special economic zone.

The 540-hectare economic zone is a collaboration between Philippine conglomerate Aboitiz Group and Japanese firm Tsuneishi Holdings, which engages in shipbuilding, shipping, environment and energy and services.

The zone plays host to various global enterprises and employs over 14,000 skilled Filipinos across medium to heavy industries, according to the Aboitiz Economic Estates.

Last year, Marcos issued Proclamation 710 to expand the West Cebu Industrial Park by designating several lots in Arpili and Buanoy in Balamban, known as the country’s shipbuilding capital.

The Philippine Economic Zone Authority provides fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to registered enterprises, including income tax holiday of four to seven years; special corporate income tax rate of five percent or enhanced deductions for 10 years for export-oriented firms; tax-and-duty-free importation of capital equipment, raw materials, spare parts or accessories; and value-added tax exemption on importation and VAT zero-rating on local purchases for goods and services.
