MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos took a swipe at Vice President Sara Duterte yesterday, stressing that his administration “never sleeps, never takes vacations” as it works to respond to the needs of the people amid their strained relationship.

Marcos made the remarks during the rollout of the “Bawat Bayan Makikinabang” initiative in Makati City.

“Expect your government to never sleep, never take a vacation. It does nothing but think of ways to address the needs of our people, the needs of our suffering countrymen, what else can we do to help. This is what we are doing,” the President said.

Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro, who has repeatedly criticized Duterte over her frequent travels abroad, echoed Marcos’ message during a press briefing.

“The government does not sleep, does not take vacations, but instead listens and acts,” Castro said.

The Office of the President earlier permitted Duterte to embark on overseas trips from May 2 to 15.

Duterte originally intended to visit the Netherlands, South Korea, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom from April 23 to May 15 “while on leave of absence at no cost to the government.”

During the event, Marcos led the turnover of financial assistance to barangays under the Socio-Civic Projects Fund in Makati City. Each barangay received P200,000, with half allocated for educational assistance.
