MANILA, Philippines — The rollback in oil and fuel prices that took effect Tuesday, April 15, only partly offsets the sustained run-up in recent weeks, officials said.

Before the adjustment, gasoline prices had risen for 13 straight weeks, while diesel and kerosene had gone up for 15 consecutive weeks.

A more immediate shift is that tax relief is beginning to reach retail prices, at least for cooking fuel. The cut translates to about P3 per kilo, or roughly P33 for an 11-kilo LPG cylinder, suggesting that the next phase of relief will depend on how quickly other retailers follow.

At the same time, economic managers have drawn a line against broader tax cuts, particularly the suspension of excise taxes on diesel and gasoline on the view that the impact on pump prices would be limited.

On the supply side, the Department of Energy said the country has about 50 days of fuel inventory. The agency also said additional LPG orders have been placed as the government looks for alternative suppliers.
