MANILA, Philippines — Health experts advised the public yesterday to take necessary precautions against holiday heart syndrome and other cardiovascular diseases.
Cardiologist James Cayetano said cases of irregular heartbeat, heart attack and stroke spike in December and January due to overeating and binge drinking.
“Everyone can have it. This is a reminder to the youth that you lose the electricity of the heart because of excessive drinking,” Cayetano said during the Kapihan sa Manila Bay Forum.
The incidence of hypertension also increases during the holidays, not only because of overeating but also due to too much stress, according to cardiologist Francis Marie Purino.
Purino said those experiencing symptoms of heart attack should immediately go to the nearest hospital.
She further advised those with existing medical conditions to have a medical checkup after the holidays.
Meanwhile, Bell-Kenz Pharma Inc. launched the nationwide Sagip CPR campaign to prepare Filipinos to give hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Eight in 10 heart attacks happen at home, according to cardiologists.
