Pura Luka Vega
Open Table Metropolitan Community Church via Facebook
MANILA, Philippines — Controversial drag artist Pura Luka Vega served the sacrament of communion at the Open Table Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in San Juan City.
The MCC posted on their Facebook account last Sunday, June 14, about its gathering attended by members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Photos shared by the group on social media show their attendance at the celebration of the Holy Mass.
“Today is a very special day because we are joined by @puralukavega to celebrate and to serve communion with us,” MCC wrote.
“This is reclaiming our space as queer people and as a marginalized community, because the Eucharist is a sacrament that is an Open Table for all. Happy Pride mga Mahal!” it added.
Open Table MCC is an ecumenical Christian church focused on providing support and assistance to the LGBTQIA+ community.
It is under the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), a Christian movement with 250 member congregations in 23 countries.
It can be recalled that Pura became controversial because of his drag art performance, where he wore a Nazarene costume and imitated Jesus Christ.
He even used the song "Ama Namin" in his performance, which drew anger and criticism from the faithful of the Catholic Church.
Subsequently, Pura was arrested at his home in October 2023 after he was sued by some groups because he allegedly insulted and blasphemed God.
In March 2024, Pura was released after posting bail of P360,000 and was finally acquitted of the cybercrime case in June 2025.
