COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Gunmen shot dead a commander in the 128th Base Command of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front on Friday night, June 12, in Barangay Tuayan Mother in the hostile Datu Hoffer town in Maguindanao del Sur province.
Officials of the Maguindanao del Sur Provincial Police Office and Capt. Steffie Salanguit, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, separately told reporters on Saturday that the victim, Nguda Abdulrahim, died from multiple bullet wounds sustained in the attack.
Traditional Moro datus and local executives in Datu Hoffer and in nearby towns had told reporters that the slain Abdulrahim had enemies in Barangay Tuayan Mother, where remnants of the Dawlah Islamiya terror group repeatedly figured in deadly clashes in recent weeks with pursuing soldiers from units of the Army’s 601st Infantry Brigade.
Municipal officials had reported to the police that Abdulrahim was inside his small house when his assailants came close, shot him with assault rifles and immediately ran away.
He was buried by his relatives on Saturday morning, based on the Islamic tradition of burying the dead within 24 hours of the time of death.
Police probers are still investigating if the apparently planned murder of Abdulrahim is related to the spate of recent gun attacks in Barangay Tuayan Mother that resulted in the death of more than 10 Moro and non-Moro ethnic Teduray residents.
Three Teduray tribesmen were killed and beheaded by their attackers in separate attacks since late last year, right in their ancestral domains near Barangay Tuayan Mother.
Teduray tribal leaders said the atrocities were perpetrated by non-Tedurays trying to drive them away to grab their farming enclaves in their state-recognized ancestral lands.
