Making peace work in the Bangsamoro

Malacañang peace adviser Mel Senen Sarmiento speaks with Rappler reporter Iya Gozum on the progress of the BARMM peace process and the challenges ahead

MANILA, Philippines – The appointment of Mel Senen Sarmiento as the new peace adviser comes a few months before the first parliamentary election in the Bangsamoro.

As head of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity of the Philippines, Sarmiento faces the enormous task of making the peace deal work for those on the ground. Their office eyes an exit agreement by 2028 – within two years, before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. leaves Malacañang.

Rappler multimedia reporter Iya Gozum talks to Sarmiento on the progress of peace process in the region and the challenges ahead.
