MANILA, Philippines — Concerned over the death due to hazing of a freshman maritime student in Cavite, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla will meet with senior Tau Gamma Phi officials to end violence within the fraternity.

In a news briefing in Quezon City yesterday, Remulla said he would meet with the national leadership of Tau Gamma Phi to discuss the spate of hazing of neophytes.

“It seems that Tau Gamma has had one too many. So I would meet with the national leadership to put an end to this cycle of violence,” Remulla said.

Mark Kenneth Alcedo, a 19-year-old student of the Philippine Nautical and Technological Colleges in Dasmarinas City, died from injuries sustained during hazing rites by Tau Gamma members.

Twenty-one people were identified by police investigators who may be involved in Alcedo’s death.

In February 2023, student John Matthew Salilig also lost his life after a hazing rite. His body was found buried in a shallow grave in Imus City.

“I am very concerned because when I was governor, it also happened in Cavite. The neophyte died in Laguna, but his tormentors were from Cavite,” Remulla said, referring to Salilig’s case.

Despite a law banning hazing, Remulla said some fraternities are still resorting to violence on neophytes.

“It disturbs me that fraternities still continue with their practice,” he said.
