DAVAO CITY – Davao City first district Rep. Paolo Duterte said on Friday, July 25, he expects President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s upcoming State-of-the-Nation Address to be empty and lack meaningful content.

Rep. Duterte said it would likely follow the pattern of previous addresses – heavy on language but lacking in substance.

“Let us consider it the new normal – a SONA without real content,” Rep. Duterte said in the local dialect. “That man is only good at speaking in English.”

He likened the President’s ideas to an empty tank. “You hit it, and there’s nothing inside,” he said.

Rep. Duterte slammed Marcos’ call for Filipinos to adapt to frequent flooding.

He said the call was dismissive of the country’s climate and infrastructure problems.

“If that’s how you respond to people affected by flooding — saying it’s the new normal — then, in my opinion, as someone who works for the people, the government should always be ready to help those in need,” Rep. Duterte said.

Rep. Duterte said the SONA should offer more than polished speeches and vague aspirations.

“People do not need fancy speeches. They need action, help, and leaders who know what they are doing.”

“There should also be concrete actions taken to ensure that no lives are lost and no property is damaged. If your mindset during a disaster is to blame the people you replaced, then you shouldn’t be working in government. And if you can’t do anything to help, resign,” he added.
