The expansion in retail price index in Metro Manila was attributed mainly to the faster increase in food prices.

MANILA, Philippines — Retail prices in Metro Manila picked up at a faster rate in November from the previous month due mainly to food price upticks.
Preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that the growth of the General Retail Price Index (GRPI) in the National Capital Region accelerated to 1.4 percent in November from 1.3 percent in October.
In November last year, the GRPI growth was also at 1.4 percent.
Used to track retail trade and to forecast business in the sector, the GRPI measures changes in prices at which retailers sell their goods to consumers relative to a base year.
The PSA attributed the higher GRPI in November compared to the previous month primarily to the faster increase in the heavily weighted food commodity group, at 1.5 percent from 1.3 percent in October.
Faster increments were also seen in three other commodity groups in November compared to the previous month.
In particular, mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials increased by 2.8 percent in November from 1.9 percent in October.
Machinery and transport equipment also registered a 0.7-percent uptick from 0.6 percent, while miscellaneous manufactured articles also rose by 0.9 percent from 0.8 percent.
Meanwhile, slower increases were observed in three commodity groups in November.
Beverages and tobacco registered a 1.7-percent increase in November from 1.9 percent in October.
Crude materials also saw a 1.9-percent uptick in November from 2.1 percent in the previous month.
Manufactured goods classified chiefly by materials posted a 1.5-percent growth from October’s 1.6 percent.
The PSA said chemicals, including animal and vegetable oils and fats, retained the previous month’s growth rate of 2.2 percent.
From January to November, average GRPI growth stood at 1.1 percent.
