BAGUIO CITY — A sharp increase in waterbird populations was recorded in the wetlands of Santa Marcela, according to the 2026 Asian Waterbird Census conducted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Friday, January 15.
The census, led by DENR through CENRO Calanasan, was conducted in partnership with DENR–Cordillera, PENRO Apayao, and the Santa Marcela local government.
A total of 4,125 waterbirds were counted, a significant increase from the 1,169 recorded in 2025, the survey found.
Survey teams monitored key wetland areas, including Bacut Lake, Tacang SWIP and marshlands in Barangays Marcela, Nueva, and Panay.
The most commonly observed species were the Intermediate Egret, Little Egret and Philippine Duck, suggesting improved conditions in the wetlands.
Other species recorded included herons, bitterns, kingfishers, bulbuls, owls, shrikes and mynahs, highlighting the area’s rich bird diversity.
DENR said the findings underscore the importance of Santa Marcela’s wetlands as habitats for both migratory and resident birds and stressed the need for continued protection, monitoring, and cooperation with local communities to sustain these ecosystems.
