MANILA, Philippines — A rockfall event occurred at Mayon Volcano yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The rockfall, detected at 9:29 a.m., was caused by the detachment or “spalling” of lava from the summit crater, Phivolcs said in an advisory.
“The rock traveled along Mi-isi Gully and rested within a kilometer of the summit,” it said.
The incident was on top of 10 rockfall events recorded in Mayon since midnight.
Entry into the volcano‘s six-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is prohibited.
