MANILA, Philippines — The Sandiganbayan has set a 10-day hearing for the bail petitions filed by former senator Ramon Revilla Jr., and former officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bulacan 1st District Engineering Office (DEO), over their malversation case involving a ghost flood control project in Pandi, Bulacan.

The bail hearings are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. on April 6, 7, 8, 10, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24, according to the Sandiganbayan Third Division Clerk of Court lawyer Dennis Pulma.

“Thirty (30) days only for the bail petition, including the resolution,” Pulma told The STAR in a text message in Filipino.

The bail hearings aim to determine whether the anti-graft court will grant the bail petition based on whether the evidence of guilt is strong.

Revilla and his co-accused – DPWH Bulacan 1st DEO assistant engineer Brice Hernandez, engineer Arjay Domasig, finance section chief Juanito Mendoza and cashier Christina Pineda – filed their bail petitions.

Only former Bulacan DPWH 1st DEO engineer Jaypee Mendoza did not file a petition for bail.

Lawyer Ma. Christina Marallag-Batacan of the prosecution panel said they have 20 witnesses for the bail hearings.

A separate division of the anti-graft court has set the trial for Revilla’s graft case, which involved the same flood control project, on April 7. The former senator has already posted a P90,000 bail for the case.

Revilla was implicated in the flood control scandal after former DPWH undersecretary Roberto Bernardo claimed he received kickbacks in exchange for endorsing flood control projects.

Ombudsman prosecutors alleged the respondents conspired to facilitate the release of about P76 million for the construction of a flood control project, which was never implemented.
