The Vice President issues the statement after her ally, Senator Bato dela Rosa, unapologetically shares an AI-generated video opposing her impeachment

MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, June 16, said she sees nothing wrong with sharing an AI-generated video of students opposing her impeachment, after her ally, Senator Bato dela Rosa, unapologetically posted the said video on his social media account.

“Wala namang problema siguro sa pag-share ng AI video in support sa akin. Basta ‘yung hindi ginagawang negosyo. Kumbaga, if I were the media account owner, and gagawa ako ng AI to support a certain personality, walang problema doon kasi hindi ko naman siya ginagawang negosyo eh. Hindi ko naman binibenta sa mga tao yung produkto ko eh,” Duterte said, when asked to react on Dela Rosa’s social media post.

(I don’t think there’s a problem with sharing an AI video that supports me — as long as it’s not being used for profit. Like, if I were a social media account owner and I created AI content to support a certain personality, there’s nothing wrong with that because I’m not making money off of it. I’m not selling it to people.)

Dela Rosa drew flak on Sunday, June 14, after he shared the video that featured two students explaining why they opposed Duterte’s impeachment. One student said he opposes the move “because it is obviously politically motivated.”

The video was generated using artificial intelligence (AI), as indicated by the “Veo” watermark in the bottom right corner. Veo is Google’s AI-powered video generator that creates videos from text or image prompts. Its latest version also allows users to add audio to their AI-generated content.

As of this posting, Dela Rosa has not taken down his post. He even responded to some comments calling him out for sharing a fake video.

“Tabang mga silingan! Giatake ko sa mga yellow ug communist trolls! Ayaw mog tabang ug away, tabang lang mo ug katawa,” Dela Rosa wrote in the comments section.

(Help neighbors! I got attacked by yellow and communist trolls! Don’t help by quarreling, just help by laughing.)

In a text message to reporters, Dela Rosa stood by his post, saying that it was the message that mattered to him, “not the messenger.”

Duterte’s impeachment trial is in limbo after the Senate, acting as the impeachment court, remanded the complaint to the House of Representatives. According to the Senate minority bloc, sending the case back to the lower chamber is effectively a dismissal.

When the 20th Congress opens in July, it will decide whether or not to proceed with the trial or drop it entirely. – Rappler.com
