MANILA, Philippines — Threatening to assassinate a sitting Chief Executive like President Marcos is no joke and must never be ignored, especially coming from Vice President Sara Duterte who is the mandated “constitutional successor,” an administration lawmaker maintained.

“Our President represents the country, and every Filipino for that matter. And if the threat is coming from his own VP who will be the constitutional successor, then this must never be swept under the rug,” House committee on good government and public accountability chair and Manila 3rd district Rep. Joel Chua said yesterday.

“This is a very serious offense that cannot just be ignored,” he stressed.

The two impeachment complaints against Duterte cited a threat she made in November 2024 in a video that has since gone viral. She said she had hired a goon to kill Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and former speaker Martin Romualdez if she is killed.

The House committee on justice has already found the complaints sufficient in form, substance and grounds, and is now conducting hearings to determine probable cause.

The panel is set to focus on the alleged threat in its next hearing tomorrow (Wednesday), where officials from the National Bureau of Investigation are expected to appear as resource persons.

Chua said the allegation involving the threat carries serious constitutional implications, pointing to two grounds for impeachment.

“Let’s check the grounds. There are two grounds – culpable violation of the 1987 Constitution,” he said. He explained that both the President and the VP are bound by their oath of office to uphold the Constitution and obey the law.
