MANILA, Philippines —The Supreme Court (SC) has canceled the certificate of candidacy (COC) of Sultan Kudarat Gov. Pax Ali Mangudadatu, disqualifying him from running in the 2022 general elections for lying about his residency.
The high tribunal denied with finality Mangudadatu’s appeal questioning a ruling of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), which declared his COC null and void, according to a statement released yesterday by the Office of the SC Spokesperson.
The high court directed Vice Gov. Prince Raden Sakaluran to assume as governor of Sultan Kudarat, based on the rule of succession as mandated by the Local Government Code.
In the run-up to the 2022 national and local elections, three disqualification complaints were filed against Mangudadatu.
The complainants argued that Mangudadatu was the incumbent mayor of Datu Abdullah Sangki in Maguindanao del Sur when he filed his COC in October 2021.
He denied the allegations, saying he resigned as mayor and transferred residence to Lutayan town in Sultan Kudarat, where he has been living since May 2021.
While the Comelec canceled his COC for residency requirement, Mangudadatu managed to obtain a temporary restraining order from the SC, which enabled him to push through with his candidacy and win as governor.
