MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed a petition questioning the Senate leadership fiasco involving Sens. Alan Peter Cayetano, Loren Legarda and Pia Cayetano.
In a statement on Wednesday, June 10, the SC said it acted on the petition of Senior High School teacher Barry Tayam, which he filed on June 5, but dismissed it for lack of legal standing.
“The SC ruled that Tayam failed to show that he suffered, or was at imminent risk of suffering, any direct injury from the actions he challenged,” the SC’s statement read.
In his petition, Tayam asked the high court to declare the presence of 12 senators during the June 3 session of the 20th Congress as a valid quorum.
The said session led to the election of Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian and new Senate committee chairpersons, which has been recognized by the House of Representatives and Malacañang.
Tayam’s filing comes amid the insistence of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano that he is the Senate president.
In his comment sent to reporters, Tayam said that he will study his next move, noting that they are currently busy with the start of the school year.
He added that they are also waiting to see if PDP-Laban will push through with filing a case before the Supreme Court, as the party was the first to announce such plans.
