BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — The Supreme Court (SC) has reversed the cancellation of the certificate of candidacy (COC) of an aspirant for city councilor in Tabuk, Kalinga in the 2025 elections.

The high tribunal handed down the ruling during its first regular session on Jan. 14, nullifying a resolution of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), which canceled the COC of Errol Comafay Jr.

Records showed that Comafay garnered a majority of the votes, but was not proclaimed due to the cancellation of his COC.

The Comelec prevented Comafay from assuming his post even as he was the number one councilor of Tabuk City.

The reversal by the SC of the Comelec ruling highlighted the judiciary’s role in resolving election-related disputes and in clarifying the legal standing of candidates, poll observers said.

The reversal is expected to impact the city governance and will pave the way for Comafay’s proclamation as a duly elected councilor.
