LINGAYEN, Philippines — Residents of Anda and Bolinao in Pangasinan have been warned against consuming shellfish collected from their coastal waters due to the presence of algae that produce red tide.
In a post on social media, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said tests conducted by BFAR’s marine biotoxin laboratory showed that shellfish meat samples collected from these towns contained the paralytic shellfish toxin.
The public has been advised to refrain from gathering, selling and eating all types of shellfish and acetes sp. or alamang harvested from Bolinao and Anda.
“Fish, squid, crabs and shrimps collected from these areas are safe for consumption, provided these are fresh and all entrails are removed and washed thoroughly before cooking,” the BFAR said.
The agency reminded local government units to enforce the ban to protect the health and safety of their constituents.
