MANILA, Philippines — Signal No. 1 has been hoisted over several areas in Mindanao on Wednesday due to Tropical Depression Basyang.

In a weather bulletin, PAGASA said that Basyang was last monitored 735 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. It currently packs maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/h.

PAGASA has hoisted Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over Surigao del Sur and the eastern portion of Surigao del Norte (Claver, Gigaquit, Bacuag), including the Siargao-Bucas Grande Islands.

The aforementioned areas can expect winds and rains within 36 hours. While it poses low threats to infrastructure, PAGASA said that rice crops may be impacted along its path.

A heavy rainfall warning has also been hoisted in several areas due to Basyang. Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental can expect rainfall of up to 100 mm.

Basyang is forecast to move westward in the next 36 hours before turning northwestward by Thursday evening.

An initial landfall is expected over eastern Mindanao by Thursday or Friday. It will cut across northeastern Mindanao, as well as Central and Western Visayas, before exiting through the Sulu Sea by Saturday.

While only a few areas are under a signal warning, PAGASA reminded the public that the northeast monsoon is still affecting the country, with most of Luzon, Visayas, Dinagat Islands, Caraga, Davao Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte expected to experience strong winds.
