BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A Singaporean-flagged bulk carrier rescued on Sunday three Negros Occidental fishermen whose boat capsized in the Mindanao Sea, the Philippine Coast Guard reported.
The PCG said MV Maud was sailing off Siocon in Zambonga del Norte when its crew spotted the fishermen clinging to the sunken boat.
Hinobaan town Mayor Daph Reliquias said the three are residents of Barangay Culipapa and were earlier reported missing by their families.
A team from the PCG-Southern Negros Occidental, led by Lt. Junior Grade James Carbajosa, facilitated the transport of the rescued fishermen, who were found to have suffered dehydration due to their 36-hour ordeal at sea.
Reliquias said the Hinobaan town government would provide P30,000 in financial assistance to the three to cover for their loss of income.
Meanwhile, the PCG in southeastern Mindanao assured the public that its units would continue the search and rescue efforts for the missing crew and passengers of the recreational boat MBCA Amejara, which sank off Davao Oriental last week.
At least five bodies were recovered during a joint Navy, Air Force and PCG search over the weekend.
The five were among the 11 passengers and four crewmembers who were reported missing on Jan. 19 after the Amejara sank off Sarangani town in Davao Occidental.
“We are still hoping to find survivors. We are hoping they (victims) are still there and they are still with us. That is why our rescue operations continue,” said CDRE Philipps Soria, the PCG-Southeastern Mindanao chief. – Gilbert Bayoran, Roel Pareño
Soria noted that previous incidents showed that victims had the will to survive and fight for their lives until they are rescued.
“We are not shifting (to retrieval operation) and we will not be counting days (for that) shift. We will continue with the search and rescue operation until practicable,” Soria said.
