DAVAO CITY — A total of 251 boxes of smuggled and counterfeit cigarettes with an estimated value of P9.8 million were confiscated at a checkpoint in Barangay Sirawan, Toril, in this city on Thursday.

The checkpoint, which was manned by the police and military, found the contraband inside a J&T express truck courier traveling from Pagadian City to Davao City.

However, upon investigation by the authorities, it turned out that the truck courier with J&T Express markings is illegal, as the driver failed to present any documents.

The van was driven by a certain Carlito, 37 years old, and a resident of Misamis Oriental.

Upon verification, the driver had no documents and identification card as proof that he is connected with the J&T express company.

It was also found out that the van has no cargo manifest and delivery order and no proper identification with the company.

The suspect is now temporarily detained while the van is being withheld at Toril Police Station. The confiscated contraband is also turned over to the BOC.

A case for violation of Republic Act 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act is being prepared for filing against the arrested individual.
