MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation has arrested internet personality Franco Mabanta for allegedly trying to extort former House speaker Martin Romualdez.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed on Wednesday, May 6, that Mabanta was arrested in an entrapment operation, according to reports.

Mabanta was arrested after receiving P300 million in marked money, Matibag said.

Mabanta, founder of the online commentary page Peanut Gallery Media Network and a self-style "political operator," allegedly claimed he had videos implicating Romualdez, a representative from Leyte, in the flood control scandal.

He allegedly demanded more than P300 million from Romualdez in exchange for not posting the videos on his page, according to Matibag.

This is a developing story. Details to follow after the NBI's press conference about Mabanta's arrest.
