COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Suspected remnants of the now defunct Dawlah Islamiya killed a motorcycle-riding off-duty soldier in an ambush in Pagayawan town in Lanao del Sur on Friday morning, January 30.

Officials of the Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office and their superiors in the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region told reporters on Saturday that the 33-year-old Cpl. Raven Bulaclac, of the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion, died instantly from bullet wounds sustained in the attack.

Bulaclac was riding his motorcycle, on his way somewhere, when he was shot with assault rifles by gunmen at Barangay Bandara-Ingud in Pagayawan, one of the 39 towns in Lanao del Sur in the Bangsamoro region.

Local officials and traditional Maranao community leaders told reporters that Bulaclac, whose family resides in Barangay Pantukan in Tugaya, Lanao del Sur, was partly instrumental in securing the surrender, in the past two years, of no fewer than a hundred Dawlah Islamiya terrorists via backchannel dialogues together facilitated by local government units and officials of the Army's 103rd Infantry Brigade and PRO-BAR.

The assailants of Bulalac immediately escaped, taking with them his personal belongings.

Police Brig. Gen. Jaysen De Guzman, director of PRO-BAR, said investigators from the Pagayawan Municipal Police Station, intelligence agents from the Lanao del sur provincial police force and local executives are cooperating in identifying the killers of Bulaclac.
