LEGAZPI CITY — Government troops in Bicol seized five high-powered firearms and explosives left by retreating members of the New People's Army (NPA) during an encounter in Barangay San Carlos, Milagros town, Masbate.
A report by the Philippine Army's (PA) 2nd Infantry Battalion revealed that the soldiers were prompted to launch a combat mission after residents reported the presence of armed men reportedly belonging to Platoon 2 of the Komiteng Larangang Guerrilla South.
The soldiers' response to the scene resulted in a 15-minute firefight.
The rebels retreated, leaving behind five high-powered firearms, including one M4 rifle, one R4 rifle, one M653 rifle and two M14 rifles, various equipment such as magazines, bandoleers, hammocks, radios and other personal items.
Brig. Gen. Randolph Cabangbang, acting commander of the PA's 9th Infantry Division, lauded his men for thwarting the rebels.

Cabangbang also expressed gratitude to the people for their cooperation and for reporting to the government troops the presence of the NPA in their area.
He also urged the remaining members of the NPA to surrender and return to the fold of law for them to avail of the government's peace programs.
