Sony’s recordable Blu-ray media discs are shutting down production by February 2025. Blu-ray discs were slated to replace DVDs at one point, but will now cease manufacturing after nearly two decades.
This marks the end of optical media storage, with Sony’s Blu-ray manufacturer thanking its customers for their patronage. With that, the production of recordable Blu-ray disc media, mini discs, and MiniDV cassettes come to a close.
Sony reiterated that there will be no succeeding models, as Blu-ray is now considered under the obsolete category for technology. Initially, production of recordable consumer Blu-rays and optical discs ended in July 2024.
While it was suggested that production would continue for businesses, it ultimately became unprofitable. Blu-ray media was a hit in the mid-2000s, but now the general public prefers subscribing to streaming services over physical discs.
Sadly, it’s the end of the line for those building their media libraries. What do you guys think of Sony shutting down production for recordable Blu-ray media? Share your thoughts with us below.
Communication graduate, closet cynic, and kid at heart. Duane is a rare person to find, quite literally. He often takes to himself but has proven his mettle in tech media with his quick wits. Well, the portfolio of scriptwriting, web content, and public relations help too, we suppose. As a homebody, he often spends his time on the streaming platform Twitch or ‘farming’ gaming clips with friends. He is also an avid fan of round glasses and anything relative to blueberries.
