MANILA, Philippines — Madrid-based Acciona Energía is on track to complete and activate its P8.7-billion wind project in Laguna this year, marking a key milestone in its expansion in the Philippines.
The company recently installed the first turbine of its 101-megawatt (MW) Kalayaan 2 Wind Farm, which, upon completion, is expected to power around 85,000 households annually.
Straddling the municipalities of Kalayaan and Paete, the project will feature 17 wind turbines designed for storm-prone environments.
These incorporate structural reinforcements, smart control systems and advanced sensors to withstand typhoons, the company said.
The Laguna project is being developed in collaboration with Chinese manufacturer Goldwind, the turbine supplier and engineering partner.
“The project will contribute to the country’s renewable energy targets of 35 percent (share) in the power mix by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040,” Acciona Energía said.
Currently, renewables account for just 25 percent of the country’s energy mix, with fossil fuels still dominating.
With the Kalayaan 2 Wind Farm, Acciona Energía aims to displace approximately 250,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.
The company has emerged as a winning bidder in the government’s fourth green energy auction, securing a 20-year offtake contract for the Laguna project and the 180-MW-peak Daanbantayan solar plant in Cebu.
This provides long-term revenue certainty for the projects’ power generation while supporting the country’s energy transition.
A subsidiary of Spanish multinational conglomerate Acciona S.A., Acciona Energía operates across 24 countries and manages a 14.6-gigawatt portfolio of renewable energy assets.
It has since delivered flagship projects such as the Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway and the Putatan II and Laguna Lake water treatment plants.
