MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Faustino Dy III honored Filipino women as modern-day “Babaylan” yesterday, recognizing their leadership, strength and vital role in nation-building as the country marks National Women’s Month.
Dy said the Babaylan, who were respected in pre-colonial Philippine society as women spiritual leaders and community guides, symbolize wisdom, courage and responsibility – qualities that continue to define Filipinas today.
“On National Women’s Month 2026, let us remember the power that has long been flowing in each Filipina, the spirit of Babaylan: leader with intelligence, adherence, courage and accountability in the community,” Dy said in a video message.
He said the same spirit is reflected in the everyday work of Filipino women across sectors.
“This spirit is life to each mother who are fighting for the future of their children, for each women’s group who are molding dreams, for each women leader in the government and other sectors,” Dy said.
The House speaker said women’s leadership makes development more inclusive and society more resilient.
He added that Congress recognizes the role of women as partners in advancing reforms and national progress, while acknowledging that many women still struggle to be heard and given opportunities.
“But the fight is not yet over. There are women who are not heard and are not given a chance. Our call is clear, nobody will be left behind,” Dy said.
“Congress will strengthen each Filipina, especially those at the bottom, women in the farms, the indigenous and women with disabilities,” he added.
Dy urged Filipino women to recognize the strength of their voices and leadership.
“To every Filipina, this is our message: don’t belittle your voice. You are the fountain of strength, the leader of our time, you are the modern Babaylan. Because of you, the future is just, inclusive and are really for all,” Dy said.
