BACOLOD CITY — A pregnant nurse died after she was hit by a speeding vehicle while she was crossing the road in Bago City, Negros Occidental, on June 1.
Maria Angela Buendia, 36, of Barangay Taloc was crossing a pedestrian lane on her way to work at the Valladolid District Hospital when she was hit by a Toyota Avanza wagon driven by Philip Jansen Cantiller, 30, a resident of Deca Homes Subdivision in Barangay Cabug, Bacolod City.
Due to the impact, she was thrown on the opposite lane and was run over by a Toyota Yaris wagon driven by Salvador Castro, 59, of Barangay Crossing Pulupundan, Pulupandan town.
The incident resulted in her baby being detached from her womb and landing on the pavement.
The nurse was brought to the Bago City Hospital along with the unborn child, but both were declared dead.

Carmela Buendia, mother-in-law of the victim, said her family is seeking justice.
"Two lives were taken from us, we will also send two drivers to prison," she said.
Lt. Col. Ariel Pico, Bago City police chief, said that they are preparing to file cases for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide against Cantiller and Castro, who are now in police custody.
The police also said that there are lights in the area, but the two vehicles involved had dark tinted windows.
The highway has six lanes and usually vehicles passing it drive fast and do not slow down when approaching pedestrian lanes, the police added.
After being informed of the incident, Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson condoled with the family of the victim.
Lacson said the provincial government will extend assistance to the family.
