MANILA, Philippines — Amid recent crime incidents involving students, the Department of Education (DepEd) is planning to establish more sports academies to encourage the youth to venture into sports instead of computer games.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara yesterday said children have a lot of energy, which must be channeled to positive activities instead of computer games, noting that physical activities are good for the youth.
Angara made the statement as he accompanied President Marcos during the inspection of the facilities of the National Academy of Sports in New Clark City.
“The President wants to impress on the public that we have facilities like this. If we have good athletes, they can come here to hone their skills. Let’s not waste our potential, let’s use it,” Angara said.
The DepEd gave assurance that facilities including the gymnastics hall, sports performance building and staff residences would be fully operational.
SJNHS cancels classes amid threat
Meanwhile, classes were suspended yesterday at the San Jose National High School (SJNHS) in Tacloban amid an alleged threat posted online.
Tacloban City Schools Division Superintendent Sherlita Palma said that DepEd activated its established coordination and security protocols in partnership with the Philippine National Police.
Palma said that as part of the precautionary measure, the presence of security officers in an around the SJNHS were intensified.
She said the Schools Division Office asked barangay officials to deploy village watchmen to augment security.
Palma urged all school heads, teachers, parents, students and stakeholders to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity.
Last month, three students were killed while 20 were wounded by two other students who went on a shooting rampage in the school.
