MANILA, Philippines — Sports journalist Edmund "Snow" Badua has been arrested by the Philippine National Police for alleged cyberlibel.
In a statement, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said that they arrested Badua in Quezon City on April 11 by virtue of a warrant of arrest for violation of Section 4 (Libel) of Republic Act No. 10175 or Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 issued by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 90 on Dec. 16, 2019.
The CIDG said that he was arrested in his home in Tandang Sora.
According to the CIDG, from April to June 2016 in Quezon City, Badua allegedly maliciously exhibited and circulated and/or cause to exhibit and circulate through and with the use of information and communication technologies malicious imputations against a Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner Willie Marcial.
Aside from being a sports journalist, Badua was a former commissioner of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.
When he was arrested, Badua claimed that his feud with Marcial had already been settled, according to a press briefing with Lt. Col. Gene Licud, Acting Chief of the CIDG Detection and Special Operations Unit.
“Nag-usap na raw sila, and it was already settled. However, nagproceed naman yung sa korte at lumabas yung arrest warrant, so we have to enforce,” Licus said.
(They reportedly settled the matter privately, but since the court issued an arrest warrant anyway, we have to proceed with the enforcement.)
Badua posted bail amounting to P30,000.
