MANILA, Philippines — SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp. has tapped Buskowitz Energy for a rooftop solar project in Cebu.

In a statement, SteelAsia said it signed a contract with Buskowitz Energy for the Compostela Works Solar Rooftop project at its plant in Cebu.

This is set to become the largest single-roof solar rooftop system in the country’s heavy industry.

Buskowitz Energy will deliver the engineering, procurement and construction, as well as the operations and maintenance of the solar rooftop project.

Targeted for completion in November this year, the eight-MWp installation will cover 65,560 square meters of roof area and use 12,888 solar panels and 54 inverters.

It is expected to generate 12,000 MWh of clean energy annually, supplying around 25 percent of the plant’s total electricity requirements.

As energy costs continue to fluctuate, industries are looking for more stable and long-term solutions for their energy needs.

The solar rooftop project is expected to reduce emissions by approximately 8,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year.

This is equivalent to recycling 73,500 tons of waste, offsetting 832 million kilometers driven by passenger vehicles or avoiding the use of 90 million liters of gasoline over a period of five years.

SteelAsia has been using renewable energy from hydroelectric and geothermal sources to support its operations.

The Compostela plant in Cebu is SteelAsia’s second facility with solar panels.

“We look forward to putting up similar projects for our other mills,” SteelAsia executive vice chairman Andre Sy said.
