MANILA, Philippines — The local stock market opened the week on a strong note, supported by optimism ahead of key macroeconomic data releases.
The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index climbed by 1.58 percent or 98.28 points to close the session at 6,334.72, while the broader All Shares index jumped by 1.03 percent or 35.11 points to 3,430.16.
Luis Limlingan of Regina Capital said the local bourse ended higher as investors welcomed the third straight month of expansion in the country’s manufacturing PMI and expectations of steady July inflation.
Limlingan said investor sentiment was further supported by optimism ahead of key macroeconomic data releases.
“Strong earnings from select index heavyweights also boosted buying interest, lifting the broader market,” Limlingan said.
Total turnover value started the week at P5.8 billion. Market breadth was positive as advancers crushed decliners, 109 to 79, while 53 issues were unchanged.
ICTSI was the most actively traded stock, rising by 4.36 percent to P1,005 per share, followed by Meralco and Converge which increased by 1.46 percent and 0.19 percent, respectively, to P487 and P10.80.
ABS-CBN shares skyrocketed by 7.27 percent to P3.69, while the share price of listed holding firm Lopez Holdings surged by 4.63 percent to P6.10 amid a report of a potential deal by the media giant with tycoons Ramon Ang and Manuel V. Pangilinan..
In a statement, however, ABS-CBN yesterday called as “not accurate” a news report which made several claims about the company, including that its management could be handed over to the group of Pangilinan.
ABS-CBN also denied that more than P10 billion has been infused into the company since 2020.
The STAR earlier reported the Lopezes have agreed in principle to sell their shares in Lopez Inc., the principal holding company of the Lopez Group of Companies, with the white knight having made an initial payment of at least P1 billion, according to sources.
