Cotabato grenade attack

COTABATO CITY , Philippines —  One of two motorcycle-riding men who hurled a grenade at a group of revelers in Matalam, Cotabato on New Year’s Eve was killed in an alleged shootout with police on Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Hammad Ansa, was cornered by pursuing police officers in Barangay Kilada.

Police said that instead of yielding, Ansa allegedly drew a gun and opened fire at the officers, triggering a firefight that resulted in his death.

Lt. Col. Arniel Melocotones, Matalam police chief, said Ansa was declared dead on arrival in a hospital.

Police have yet to arrest Ansa’s companion who was driving the motorcycle during the attack, which wounded 22 people including minors.

Security tightened

As this developed, the Philippine National Police (PNP) yesterday tightened security in Cotabato following the grenade attack.

Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez said he directed all police units in the province to intensify checkpoints and road blocks to prevent the remaining suspect from escaping.

“The PNP condemns the incident and reaffirms its commitment to protecting the public,” Nartatez said.

He urged residents to cooperate with the police in identifying and locating the remaining suspect.

“We will not stop until the suspect is arrested and justice is delivered for the victims,” Nartatez said.

He urged residents of Cotabato to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities in their communities.

Nartatez said the attack was an isolated incident.

The victims were setting off firecrackers to welcome the New Year in Barangay Dalapitan when the suspects arrived and hurled a grenade at them.

Most of the victims suffered shrapnel wounds in the legs. They were rushed to the nearest health facility for treatment.

Brig. Gen. Arnold Ardiente, Soccsksargen police director, said that villagers and members of Muslim communities led police to Ansa’s hideout. –  Emmanuel Tupas
