MANILA, Philippines — The drainage rehabilitation project of the Department of Public Works and Highways along Taft Avenue in Manila will be completed before the end of 2027, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said yesterday.
Dizon inspected the progress in the widening and improvement of drainage between T.M. Kalaw Avenue and Ayala Boulevard, noting that the project would ease flooding in the area during strong typhoons and heavy rainfall.
“We need to complete these projects as quickly as possible. Right now, we are dredging waterways, repairing gaps in the dikes, and fixing drainage systems to ensure that water moves more quickly toward the rivers. All of these efforts must be carried out simultaneously and with urgency,” Dizon said.
He said the DPWH will need more than P1.2 billion to implement the repair and expansion works in line with the government’s Oplan Kontra Baha – a joint effort of multiple agencies and the private sector to institutionalize the government’s efforts to mitigate flooding in flood-prone areas.
Ahead of the rainy season, Dizon ordered the dredging and desilting of creeks.
He stressed that the DPWH would strive to finish all the projects it started, including those that have been stalled.
Earlier, he visited a larger drainage project along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City and the Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project in Marikina.ggggggg
